COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Highlands Gran Fondo showcases some of the best riding around.  It’s hard to believe riding this good is located in such close proximity to the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area.  The Highlands area is a 1,343 square mile region of Northern New Jersey which is noted for its scenic landscape and environmental importance. Much like this ride, the area is composed of rolling farmland, hilly ridgelines, and winding roads that weave up and down the lush green mountains. As you enjoy the diversity of the beautiful terrain and scenery, the route will take you through three counties and two states. As the loop progresses so will the elevation, the gran loop will gain 8,000 vertical feet. This event is sure to expose you to roads you never thought could be tucked away so close to one of the biggest metropolitan areas in the country.

Maps:

Maps for 35 mile, 60 mile and 100 mile loops are available for download at the following locations:

Timed Sections: (THE RACE)

This is not a start to finish race, your overall time is not calculated only timed sections count.

There are timed sections along the route.  As you approach the time sections please travel through the designated area (in your lane of traffic!) so your chip can be properly read and recorded.  The times for your timed sections will be compiled for your review at the finish. 100 mile = 4 timed sections; 60 mile = 3 timed sections; 30 mile = 2 timed sections. You can view all the details for timed section on the above map links, click the map icons for details.

Time sections are open for specific durations. In order to be timed and eligible for awards you must maintain a progression speed between 22mph and 10mph. NOTE: this is progression speed not average speed- progression speed includes all stopped time.  Below is a list stating the times sections are open.

All timed sections are free of intersections and you have the right of way.  You will not be racing through intersections, this means you can slow down, stop, and be safe. You Must Obey Traffic Laws.  This is not a closed course, Think Safety First.

CUT OFF TIMES

For 100 & 60 mile riders, no exceptions!

If you do not maintain an average progression speed greater than 10mph you will be directed to take a shorter route.  These cut off spots will happen at the pre-established splits and you will be directed to the shorter route. Please Note:  This is a 10mph progression speed not average speed.  Progression speed includes all stopped time.   No exceptions!

Awards and Raffles

Awards for the 35 and 60 mile riders will be held by 3:00pm. Awards will be held after 3:30PM and before 4:30PM for 100 mile riders.

Awards for the fastest times. Three deep for each category. Custom produced Highlands Gran Fondo Winners Jersey’s and shorts will be awarded to the fastest riders in each age category of the 100 mile event.  Categories may be combined at promoter’s discretion.  The fastest male in section 2 and in section 4 and the fastest female in section 1 and in section 3 will win a prize.

Please understand, it is not possible to tell who won until everyone is finished… this is the nature of a gran fondo, the first one back is not necessarily the winner.  We will have great food and High Point Brewery will provide a sample beer (then you can buy more) to help you get to awards. If you do place in the top three of your age group, and you cannot/wish-not-to wait for the awards ceremony, you can send a self-addressed postage-paid mailing package to us and we will mail you your award.  If you are not present at awards you will not receive any prizes, the prize will go to raffle and make someone else happy.
